Prenatal Yoga: Supporting Your Body and Mind During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a special period in which a woman's body and mood go through many changes. During this time, yoga offers more than physical comfort: it can also help expectant mothers maintain their emotional balance and feel more prepared for birth.

The Support Prenatal Yoga Offers

As the body's center of gravity shifts during pregnancy, tension in the back, lower back and hip areas is common. Gentle stretching movements and proper breathing techniques can help ease discomfort in these areas. Regular breathing practice also helps develop the ability to stay calm, which is often needed during the birth process.

A Different Approach for Each Trimester

The body's needs are different in each trimester. In the first trimester, energy fluctuations and nausea may come to the fore, while in the second trimester there is usually more energy and capacity for movement. In the third trimester, because of balance, shortness of breath and increased weight, it is recommended to soften movements even further and to use supportive props (cushions, blocks, etc.). For this reason, unlike regular yoga classes, prenatal yoga classes should be planned trimester by trimester.

What to Know for Safety

  • Always get your doctor's approval before starting any exercise program
  • Avoid postures that require lying on your back for long periods, especially from the second trimester onward
  • Stay away from movements that put pressure on the abdomen or involve deep twisting of the waist
  • Do not let your body temperature rise too high; avoid practicing in hot environments
  • Prefer to work with a trainer who has received specific training in prenatal yoga

Why Is Expert Guidance Important?

Every movement made during pregnancy needs to be safe for both mother and baby. For this reason, working with a specially certified trainer who understands pregnancy physiology, the differences between trimesters and the possible risks makes a big difference in terms of both safety and effectiveness.
